How To Plant Roses

Rose Planting Instructions

Step 1: Site Location

Roses are hardy plants and tolerant a wide range of conditions, but they do have a few basic requirements to consider:

Sun: at least 4-6 hours
Soil:
rich loamy soil
Drainage:
require well drained soil, even in winter
Space:
allow enough room for plantings without competition

Step 2: Excavation

Start by digging a hole twice as wide and 1 and 1/2 times as deep as the container. The hole should have vertical sides and a flat bottom. Excavated soil should be saved and used in the next step.

Step 3: Soil Preparation

Mix well in equal parts, the following:

Existing soil - breakup large clumps of clay
Organic matter
- such as Sohagnum peat, leafgro, pinefines, or topsoil
Granular matter
- such as perlite, sand, or pine bark

Step 4: Final Plant Placement and Backfill

Start by placing enough prepared soil mix in bottom of hole such that when the rose is placed in the hole the crown or bud union is at ground level or slightly above. Carefully remove rose from container and place into hole. If the roots from a solid , circling mass, gently loosen them at this time. Continue to backfill around the plant with prepared soil mix, lightly tamping to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly with Plant Starter to ensure strong root development.
